Meeting Time: First Tuesday of the Month at 6:30pm Goals: The purpose of
the committee is to support local programs that work with youth, educate the
public about local youth issues, and provide ongoing public awareness of local
events and resources for youth within the Winnetka area.
Sunny Brae Mural: February 2009


Two views of the Sunny Brae Mural "Read Every Day" by artist Steven Leal. This
mural was paid for by the WNC to promote reading in Winnetka and encourage
students in their academics. The mural shows characters from children's books,
including: Charlotte's Web, Curious George, Harry Potter, Cat in the Hat, Humpty
Dumpty, The Little Engine That Could, and the Three Little Pigs.
Youth Expo: October 2008

On October 25, 2008, kids and families from all over came to the 2008 Youth Expo
to the Winnetka Elementary School to have fun, eat, see shows, and learn about
great programs right here in the West Valley. Over 20 local agencies were
represented with games and activities, and representatives were on hand to give
information about how kids and families can get more involved with programs like
after school tutoring and recreation, GED and college classes, and career
development.

WNC Board member receive a certificate from Councilman Zine for hosting the 2008
Youth Expo.

Members of LA Fire Department Station 104 in Winnetka, and LA Police
Department’s Explorer’s came to meet and answer questions, and kids and families
got to explorer a spotless fire engine, an ambulance, and a patrol car. Dancers
from the Winnetka Recreation Center and the El Camino Real High School Drill
Team gave show stopping performances, and Councilman Dennis Zine came out to
enjoy in the fun and honored the Neighborhood Council with a certificate of
recognition for sponsoring the day. The event was informative and great fun, and
any thanks go out to all the people and agencies involved!
Multicultural Learning Center
The Youth Committee identified a need for dictionaries, encyclopedias and
books for the Multicultural
Learning Center in Winnetka at 7510 DeSoto. This was approved by the board
during the April 2008 meeting. The center is a public charter school within
LAUSD that serves approximately 250 children in grades Kindergarten through 8th
grade. A main component of its program is that conducts classes in both English
and Spanish and promotes bilingual language acquisition. The school librarian,
Mrs. Anderson made a presentation to the board about the school.
New Elementary
School

LAUSD broke ground June 4, 2008 on a new elementary school to be built on the
grounds of the Sutter Elementary School. The new school will serve 650 students
in 26 classrooms on 3.6 acres at 7335 N. Lubao Ave. It is planned to open Fall
2010. A preconstruction meeting was held.
